The success of the event is no doubt due in part to the wide appeal of the Beatles’music.  But it also owes a tremendous amount to a wide range of people.  First of course are the musicians who put countless hours into preparing a musical performance that many said was impossible.  Thanks also go to honorees Mayor Bill White and David Adickes, whose participation helped legitimize a fledgling nonprofit.  Our Savoy Truffle participating restaurants donated the fabulous food that helped make it a first class event.  Artist Don Bertram displayed dozens of works of original art, the proceeds of which went directly to the bottom line.  Anita Kruse of Purple Songs Can Fly and Carol Herron of Texas Children’s Cancer Center provided consistent support.  Lacking any staff, the Love Street board formed the core of the volunteer effort, putting in tremendous time to make the event happen.  And finally, special recognition for the performance goes to Johnny Ono, whose persistance got the project off the ground, and Dave Blassingame, whose tireless work and tremendous talent helped bring it all together.

We had a great time putting on White Album for Purple Songs event. Thanks to everyone who made it happen from the sound and lights guys to the great bands to our Savoy Truffle restaurant participants to Don Bertram and his groovy art. The event was a great success in every way. We raised $10,000 for the Purple Songs Can Fly Project at Texas Children’s Cancer Center.

We have heard tremendous feedback from our guests. If you attended the event, please tell us about your experience by leaving a comment here.

Vatican: Beatles music better than today’s songs

VATICAN CITY – Vatican media are praising the Beatles’ musical legacy and sounding philosophical about John Lennon’s boast that the British band was more popular than Jesus.

Vatican newspaper L’Osservatore Romano recalls that Lennon’s comment outraged many when he made it in 1966.

But it says in its Saturday edition that the remark can be written off now as the bragging of a young man wrestling with unexpected success.

The newspaper as well as Vatican Radio last week noted the 40th anniversary of the Beatles’ “White Album.”

It said the album demonstrated how creative the Beatles were, compared with what it called the “standardized, stereotypical” songs being produced today.   [End]

 

Another interesting item is the recent and well-timed auction of  a copy of the White Album bearing serial number 0000005.  It reportedly fetched more than $30,000.  See story here.

The sweetest of them all was the Savoy Truffle.

To celebrate the song and the mysterious ultimate sweet,  Houston’s top pastry chefs recently featured their own version of the infamous Savoy Truffle.  Those lucky enough to attend our White Album for Purple Songs event were able to try them all side by side!  Many thanks to our participating restaurants:
